The Patriots made headlines this offseason with a bevy of trades to improve their Super Bowl roster, but none more noteworthy than the trade that landed Brandin Cooks in Foxboro. New England turned their first-round draft selection into a player that posted back-to-back 1,100 yard campaigns with the New Orleans Saints.

Cooks gives Tom Brady a legitimate deep threat, and that’s just how the future Hall of Fame quarterback has used him through three games. The receiver ranks sixth in total receiving yards, is averaging 25.6 yards per catch, and is the only player to haul in at least three 40-yard receptions. The two connected for a game-winning score against the Texans last week.

Even though the Patriots are averaging over 30 points a game this season, the offense hasn’t looked great at all times. It has had a number of productive drives, but then others that have been less than. Before the game-winning two-minute drive against the Texans last week, the Patriots had two straight three-and-outs before Brady’s magic. The Patriots will look to build on this drive and get more consistency. Carolina comes in with the No. 1 ranked defense, but the Texans’ may be better. This has the potential to be a big week for the offense, especially with Carolina missing starting cornerback Daryl Worley.

The Patriots defense is statistically the worst in the NFL right now, but it is going against a poor Carolina offense led by Newton. The Panthers have changed their offense so Newton doesn’t run as much to preserve his body, but it hasn’t really caught on. In the three games, Newton hasn’t passed for more than 178 yards once. The Patriots defense had trouble with Deshaun Watson, another mobile quarterback last week, so that will surely be a point of emphasis this week. Given how Newton has played so far this season, this could be a game for the Patriots defense to get things back on track.

The Patriots have arguably one of the deepest backfields in the league, but haven’t really done much with it in the first three games. The only game where the running backs were a major part of the offense was in Week 2 when the Patriots beat the Saints 36-20 in their best game so far this season. The backs weren’t involved much in the Week 1 loss to the Chiefs (particularly in the passing game) and same for last week against the Texans. With Rex Burkhead doubtful, it should be a big week for Mike Gillislee and James White. It will be worth watching how much action Dion Lewis gets, as he’s just played 32 snaps this season. It could be case of the team preserving him for the stretch run, or perhaps the team views him differently than first thought. This week could be telling.

Fun facts

1. On third down this season, Brady is 20-for-28 with 301 yards and three touchdowns to go along with a 142.1 QB rating. That is the best in the NFL.

2. Gronkowski needs 43 more receiving yards from Brady to move past Wes Welker (6,300) for the most receiving yards from Brady.

3. In their last 13 games, the Panthers haven’t passed for more than 290 yards once.

4. Brady has gone 215 passes without an interception in the regular season. This is his second-longest streak of his career, trailing his 358-pass streak, which is the NFL record set in 2010-11.

5. The Patriots are undefeated when Chris Hogan scores a touchdown (7-0, includes the playoffs).

Patriots 34, Panthers 20

This is looking like a good bounce-back week for the Patriots defense facing a suspect Carolina offense and Newton, who hasn’t looked the same in quite some time. Offensively, while Carolina is statistically the best defense in the NFL, the Patriots offense could expose some of its weaknesses and should put up 30-plus points once again.
