After injuries torpedoed their season last year, the Vikings are back in the thick of the NFC North race thanks to a balanced offense and aggressive defense. The Vikings rank second in the NFL in total offense after three weeks and have found a capable replacement for Adrian Peterson in Cook, a rookie second-round pick. Diggs and Adam Thielen give the Vikings two weapons on the outside, and Kyle Rudolph is red-zone threat. Sam Bradford will miss his third game with a knee injury, but backup Case Keenum has thrown three touchdowns and no interceptions while in two starts and last year completed 19 straight passes at one point against the Lions. On defense, the Vikings have two good edge rushers in Griffen and Danielle Hunter and a top run-stuffer in nosetackle Linval Joseph. They bring a variety of different blitzes with their front seven, and have two good defensive backs in Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith.

The Lions and Vikings are two pretty evenly matched teams, and as well as their defenses have played this year, this should be a relatively low-scoring affair.

The Lions have one of the most opportunistic defenses in the NFL with eight takeaways through three games, and they’ll need to keep that up against a Vikings team that’s taken precious care of the football. Stopping Cook is a big challenge, but a must if the Lions are going to slow down the league’s No. 3-ranked offense.

Offensively, the Lions need to be better on first downs, and that means they need more out of Abdullah and their afterthought of a running game. Stafford will make his share of plays, and Prater makes the Lions a threat to score just about any time they cross midfield. But if the Lions settle for too many field goals again on Sunday, they’ll head home on a two-game losing streak.
